I tried to open an XML file which is around 160 MB in size and saw the following error: 
Is this a known limitation?
Is there some more info that you need?

WindowsError: [Error 109] The pipe has been ended.I think you may have indeed run into a limit there, though I suspect this is not an arbitrary limit and one dependant on many factors.
That said, a 160mb XML file is a bit of an unsual use case and not one that Komodo specifically seeks to address.
Should we not seek to address this?

I like Komodo Edit a lot. I think, and this is completely my opinion, that we should work on making Komodo Edit free from file size limitation. This is because:
Notepad is only showing the raw file contents, it performs no additional actions on it. That’s a bit like saying Notepad uses way less resources than Komodo; of course it does.
It’s not a hard limitation and it’s certainly something worth looking into from a profiling perspective, but I dont see a lot of value in an IDE that allows you to edit 100mb+ files, as it would need to read the entire file to provide IDE capabilities.
It would definitely be nice to have the ability simply to open and read/scan through extremely large files, but I don’t see that as being a huge priority on our roadmap. Komodo Edit is open source though and we’d be happy to review pull requests, hint hint
I agree with what you said, but please hear me out.
Basically, I like KomodoEdit a lot and want it to behave in a strongly predatory manner, consuming anything that comes in its way, and not failing when a large prey comes along - strong like a Komodo Dragon. 
I had included three very different examples to show the variety we are dealing with:
All three can handle the large file I threw at them.
This is what I am suggesting:
When KomodoEdit encounters a file that is larger than what it can handle as an IDE, let it fallback to a mode where we disable all processing and open the file as a raw text file.
We do not have to show an error message and quit. We can simply add a warning somewhere on the UI informing the user that we will disable all processing i.e., no syntax highlighting etc., but open the file.
Visual Studio uses the same tactic although it never adds a visible warning message. The file size limit is configurable (not easy).
As far as Kdiff is concerned, it opens 2 files of the same size while comparing. That is more than 300 MB in one go. It has to analyze a lot too (comparable to KomodoEdit?). It still works.
I just opened a 300mb file in Komodo IDE without issue; that’s what I mean - there is no hard limit. It all depends on what addons, what file and how many system resources you have. There is no simple fix that would let Komodo go from “not” supporting a 300mb file to supporting it. The solutions it to improve overall performance with large files for individual components. It’s not a task we can simply outline and schedule a certain amount of time for, so naturally more prominent enhancements/bug fixes take priority.

Added a new label “PRs-Welcome”, indicating it is not an issue we are explicitly focused on.
I definitely understand your concern and your desire to be able to use Komodo for “everything”, I certainly share that sentiment. But given that there are so many things we want to do with Komodo we have to pick and choose what we focus our attention on and in the large scheme of things the enhancement discussed here is negligible.
I understand what you mean @nathanr. Adhering to the roadmap is all about prioritizing tasks.
